Kinja'd!!!

I came across this at an air/car show in Georgetown, TX on Saturday. Owner said the engine is a 427 small block. That's all I know about it. How would this engine compare with the original power plant?

That's my kind of German engineering!

I would think that it makes its power and torque lower in the rev band and given that it's a big inch SBC I'd think that it would have quite a lot of that torque.

If it's all aluminum, not by much.

Makes sense. Thanks. The owner said they had to put it in from underneath. Certainly is a tight fit!

Lift off oversteer in a corner must be... deadly.

True story. The 3.0L was a bit of a pig. I didn't think of an aluminum 427 sbc build.

Depends on what year that car was manufactured. Since it's a G-Model, it could either have:

2.7L(1974-1977): 150-173hp

Carrera 3.0L(1976-1977): 200-210hp

SC 3.0L(1978-1983): 180-204hp

Carrera 3.2L(1984-1989): 207-231hp

If it's naturally aspirated, it would have one of these engines.

In any case, That car has been ruined IMO. Now, I'm alright with someone doing this to a 996, but not a 993, 964, or any classic 911. That car is a couple days late for Halloween. That V8 will not compare in terms of sound, , maybe power and torque, but that's it.

I don't like it one bit. -_-

427 short blocks are not something I knew was a thing. I had to assume it's basically a 400 with a longer throw crank, and that appears to be the case. This means, of course, that the bores are siamesed beyond insanity. If that thing ever gets hot, it will blow merry hell out of its head gaskets.

To each his own, I guess. I would rather have it closer to original myself, but I was just surprised to see that Chevy lump in the back.

Shame its not a LS based engine just so it could get more hate. Honestly this proves one of my sayings "if it has 4 wheels someone some where has put a GEN 1 SBC in it"

Looking it up, that 427 in it is cast iron with aluminum heads. http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/cr…

As an addendum to my last, a 427 would mean a 4" stroke. That's a quarter inch longer than any stroke Chevy ever offered stock. Either it has an offset grind on the journals and small bearings, or a custom crank just asking to scrape itself on things. It's not every engine that, on losing time, stands good odds of having lobes destroyed by the crank directly.

EDIT: I was wrong. There do appear to be ones with tiny liners. So dumb.

I don't think an aluminum 427SBC is possible, unless you did a multi-cylinder liner casting or aluminum bores. The 4.125" bore SBC has the cylinders siamesed so close together that any sort of aluminum version would likely have the lifespan of a gnat anyway. OTOH, it's not really any heavier than a 350.

It's not sane, but there do appear to be 4.125" bore SBC blocks available in aluminum. The horror.

I LIKE THE TARGA!! Stop hating on it. I think it looks unique and cool; clearly you don't, and that's fine. But I'm getting a Targa one day dammit, already have a coupe at home.

This was the Georgetown Airfest, apparently the 5th annual event. I've never been before. So I inagine the next one will be about the same time of year. I didn't know it was a car show too. I went for the planes, but the car show was bigger. The light was pretty poor for photography, and I don't have lots of experience shooting cars. But I'll post a few pics tomorrow after I edit them.

I'll keep an eye open, but I rarely go to car shows. And to reply to your previous reply, no, I don't mind at all.
